The Multi-Party Government is extending the registration of the debt rehabilitation programme for an additional three months for qualifying Johannesburg residents. This is part of the new government’s Golden Start for our city which strives to create a caring and compassionate city for all residents.
This programme was first initiated by the DA-led coalition government in 2017 to support residents who were struggling to meet their debt commitments. The Covid pandemic has had a significant impact on the country’s economy, with many residents experiencing a loss of income.
The first phase of this programme was rolled out in 2017, the second phase from July 2021 to December 2021, and now it will be extended by a further four months from 1 March 2022 to 30 June 2022.
The projected write-off of all debts older than 90 days is valued at R16 billion, and will not only ease the debt burden for qualifying customers but will also provide the basis for the rehabilitation of debtors over the next three years. Through this programme the City will benefit from improved revenue collections and liquidity, enabling the increased delivery of services.
I look forward to even more initiatives like this one as part of the Golden Start, and I commend our Executive Mayor, Cllr Mpho Phalatse, and the MMC for Finance, Cllr Julie Suddaby, for driving this vital programme.
