DA Lays charges over water crisis

DA LAYS CHARGES OVER THE WATER CRISIS

On Saturday, 4 September 2021, the Democratic Alliance (DA) opened a case at the Moffatview Police Station to against the Member of the Mayor Committee (MMC) for Environment and Infrastructure Services (EIS), Councillor Mpho Moerane.  The case laid was over the recent water crisis in the suburbs of South Hills, Linmeyer, Risana, Tulisa Park, parts of Oakdene and parts of Rosettenville Ext.

Present to lay the charges was Councillor Michael Crichton (Ward 56), Councillor Faeeza Chame (Ward 57), Councillor Mpho Phalatse (DA Mayoral Candidate for Johannesburg), Councillor Tyrell Meyers (Ward 23), Councillor Stuart Marais (Ward 54), Councillor Rashieda Landis (Ward 55), Councillor Matsobane Sekhu (PR Councilor), and the Member of Parliament for Johannesburg South Manny de Freitas MP.

These beleaguered residents did not have water for nine days from the 4th to 13th July 2021 and then barely a month later there was a week-long outage from the 26th August to September 2021.  Councillors Crichton and Chame requested MMC Moerane to intervene as the political head of Johannesburg Water but he failed to do so.

As a result, sections of the Constitution have been contravened as well as various pieces of legislation, namely the Municipal Structures Act, the Municipal Structures, the Water Services Act and the National Water Act.

We could not sit by idly while the resident’s constitutional rights have been violation. We will be monitoring the developments of this case.
